CFD analysis for Turbomachinery : verification of performance curve of a fan
CFD Applications : Verification of Performance Curve of a Fan
Axial flow fan has wide range of application in industry. The main usage of the axial flow fan is to provide the forced ventilation. The size and the performance of the fan will change depending upon the type of the application used. For example for circuit board cooling in the CPU small fans are used. But in the tunnels large axial fans are used.
In the most of the industrial cooling systems, the performance of the entire system is depends on the performance of the fan. In this study, numerical simulation has to be done to understand the flow behavior and to improve the performance of the fan.
The objective of this study is to understanding the existing axial flow fans and improving the performance of the fan.
Challenges
- Modeling the MRF zone for the fan.
- Finding the correct turbulence model.
- Maintaining the Y+ value.
Multiple Reference Frame(MRF) Approach
Multiple reference frame(MRF) approach is a steady state method, in which a group of cellzone will rotate instead of the fan blades. In other words instead of rotating the fan, the fluid around the fan will rotate. This approach will give the same result as the original.
Results:
- The performance curve can be determined based on CFD analysis.
- By analyzing the results the scope of improvement is determined e.g. inclusion of orifice / bell-mouth
