HVAC System Design : Fan Performance & Selection
Fans play a major role in HVAC applications and affects the performance of HVAC systems. There are many types of fan used in HVAC systems e.g axial fan & centrifugal fan.
Role Of Axial Fan:
Axial fan are low cost fan which produce nominal pressure difference, so they are mostly used for small scale application with light static pressure . In HVAC system they are placed on the rooftop, the purpose is to cool the condensers. In axial fan the air flows parallel to the shaft about the blade rotates. Axial fans will not be used in the air handling unit because they cannot overcome the static pressure. The axial fan produces less noise and are vibration free. The axial fans are also used as duct fan to make the air flow inside the duct at the required constant volume. All fans are not capable of changing speed, the axial fans contains fixed speed or multiple speeds.
Role Of Centrifugal Fan:
Centrifugal fan are used inside the home system i.e the air handling unit because they can overcome the total pressure. The total pressure includes static pressure and the dynamic pressure and large quantity of air can be drawn. The centrifugal fan uses the kinetic energy of the impeller to increase the volume of the air stream. The main reason for using it in the system rather than on the rooftop is that it is a constant displacement system which means at a constant speed they displace constant volume of air rather than constant mass of air. The centrifugal fans are coupled with motors with belt drives and these belt drives can be adjusted to vary the speed.
